Bush Fire Risk Update: What Clients Need to Know This Summer

28 November 2025

As we head into summer, several regions across Australia - including southern Victoria, central New South Wales, and parts of Western Australia - are facing heightened wildfire risks. Persistently warmer and drier conditions throughout 2025 have left landscapes vulnerable, especially in wine-producing areas, coastal towns, and agricultural land.

The Australian and New Zealand National Council for fire and emergency services warns that severe dryness in Victoria could rapidly transition the state to highly flammable conditions by January, with increased risk in areas such as Kinglake, previously devastated by the Black Saturday fires.

Globally, 2025 has seen significant wildfire activity, with major incidents in Los Angeles, Japan, and Europe leading to substantial insurance losses. In Australia, peak fire season typically begins in September in Queensland, with elevated risks for southern regions - including Sydney Melbourne and Canberra - through February.

While La Niña may bring some wetter conditions, forecasts suggest rainfall will be unpredictable, offering little certainty of relief. Climate change continues to drive more frequent and intense extreme weather, increasing the risk of fires, storms, and flooding.
